Math Lesson 5: A Paranormal Problem

Ghost

On a dare, I walked into a haunted house last night. I crept upstairs and opened the door to the master bedroom. I screamed in terror for there were 189 ghosts, zombies and harpies dancing on the creaky bed. There were 13 more zombies than harpies, and twice as many ghosts as the total number of harpies and zombies. How many ghosts did I see before I fled the scene?

Let's Solve It!

Let's draw the bar for the harpies first.

Bar diagram

Next, we shall draw the bar for the zombies. Remember, there were 13 more zombies than harpies.

Bar diagram

Now is the tricky part. We are told that there were twice as many ghosts as the total number of harpies and zombies. To make it easier, I shall break that down into 2 steps. The same sentence can be rewritten as "the number of ghosts is equal to twice the number of harpies plus twice the number of zombies." Let's draw the bars for twice the number of harpies first.

Bar diagram

Next I shall draw the bars for "twice the number of zombies." And I shall also put in the total figure of 189, and our diagram is complete.

Bar diagram

Look at the diagram for the ghosts. Do you notice that it is equal to twice the number of harpies and zombies?

Now we are ready to do the calculation.

Let's get the total value of the 6 units first:
189 - (13 x 3) = 150

Therefore, each unit is: 150 รท 6 = 25

The total number of ghosts is: (25 x 4) + (13 x 2) = 126

The answer is 126.

Now it's your turn to solve 3 Interactive Math Problems.
