Question 1: An Alien Problem
A UFO landed in my backyard. To my delight, 365 cute fluffy pink aliens opened the hatch and smiled at me. I gasped in horror immediately after that for right behind the fluffy aliens were snarling three-headed aliens. If there were 643 more three-headed aliens than fluffy aliens, what was the total number of aliens in my backyard? I barbecued some frogs for them and sent them home to Planet Banorwat.
Let's Solve It!
We have to draw 2 bars first - one to represent the Fluffies and one for the Snarlers. Let's make the bar for the Snarlers longer because there are more of them.

Next, let's insert all the numbers we have been given. We know that there are 365 Fluffies.

We also know that there are 643 more Snarlers than Fluffies.

The question asks for the total number of aliens. It is a good idea to put a question mark to show what needs to be answered. So let's do that.

By looking at the above figure, we know that if we add 643 to 365, we will get the total number of Snarlers.

We want to know the total number of aliens. So let's add the Fluffies and Snarlers.

There you go. The total number of aliens is 1373. That was a piece of cake, wasn't it? Now go and get some papers, a pencil, a ruler and an eraser. Then click here for your 3 Interactive Math Problems.
