6th Grade Math Lesson 10 A Far-fetched Fairy Story
I was walking in a park last Monday when I stumbled upon a strange sight. 80 magical creatures were having a tea party on the back of a grizzly bear. 8 of those creatures were elves. The rest were gnomes and fairies. If there were 3 times as many fairies as elves and gnomes put together, how many more fairies than gnomes did I see?
Let's Solve It!
Please draw the following diagram on a piece of paper. By drawing along with me step by step, you will be better able to understand how I solve this problem. The question says that there were 3 times as many fairies as the total number of gnomes and elves. So let's draw the model for that first.

Next let's write the total number of magical creatures in our model, which is 80, and also put in the number of elves, which is 8.

Notice that there are 4 units altogether (3 for the fairies, and 1 for the elves and gnomes). It should be easy to get the value of 1 unit - we divide the total of 80 by 4. Value of 1 unit: 80 รท 4 = 20 After this, computing the number of gnomes and fairies is a piece of cake. Number of gnomes: 20 - 8 = 12 Number of fairies: 20 x 3 units = 60 And finally we can answer the question: how many more fairies than gnomes did I see? Fairies - gnomes = 60 - 12 = 48
