Question 3: Fortune Teller
Mary, Larry and Gary went to a fortune teller on New Year's Day. To their horror, the fortune teller told them that they would meet with a total of 702 accidents this year. Larry would have twice as many accidents as Mary. But poor Gary was the unluckiest of them all for he would have 3 times as many accidents as Larry. How many accidents will Gary have this year?
Let's Solve It
Let's draw the bar for Mary first.

Next, let's draw the bar for Larry. We are told that Larry would have twice as many accidents as Mary.

And finally, Gary's bar. Poor Gary will have 3 times as many accidents as Larry.

Let's not forget the total number of accidents. It is 702. So let's write that down too.

If we count the number of units, we will get 9 (Mary has 1, Larry has 2, and Gary has 6). To get the value of each unit, we will have to divide 702 by 9 units. Each unit: 702 รท 9 = 78. The question asks for the number of accidents Gary will have this year. Gary has 6 units. Therefore, we will have to multiply 78 by 6 units. Number of accidents Gary will have this year: 78 x 6 = 468 The answer is 468. It's going to be a terrible year for him, isn't it? Now try these 3 Online Interactive Math Questions.
