Math Lesson 9: Crocodile Teeth

Crocodile teeth

I have two adorable pet crocodiles which I keep in my bathtub. I named them Sparkles and Glare. They used to have a total of 238 teeth. However, Glare escaped from the bathtub this week and bit the postman. He lost 118 teeth because the postman was wearing a prosthetic leg made of titanium. Now Glare has 3 times as many teeth as Sparkles. I cried for two days. How many teeth did my dear Glare have in the beginning?

Let's Solve It

Please draw the following diagram on a piece of paper. By drawing along with me step by step, you will be better able to understand how I solve this problem.

After Glare lost 118 teeth, he had 3 times as many teeth as Sparkles. Let's draw the model for that now.

Bar model

How would the model look like before Glare lost his teeth? Glare had 118 more teeth. And the total number of teeth for the 2 crocodiles was 238. Look at the changes I made in the next diagram. I have added 118 to Glare's bar. I have also put in the total of 238.

Bar Model

Let's compute the value of each unit first.

Value of 4 units: 238 - 118 = 120

Value of 1 unit = 120 รท 4 = 30

Let's write that in our model.

Bar Model

The question asks for the number of teeth Glare had in the beginning. You should be able to come up with the answer by looking at the model.

Number of teeth Glare had in the beginning:

118 + (30 x 3 units) = 208

6th Grade Online Math Lesson 9: Answer

Glare had 208 teeth in the beginning.

Online Math Lesson 9 is not too hard, I hope! Now it's your turn to solve 3 Interactive Math Problems.
