6th Grade Math Lesson 12: Snakes for Sale
My mother sells snakes in a pet shop in Texas. She used to sell the cobras and pythons at the same price until an irate customer complained that his cobra bit his neighbor's Rottweiler and the python swallowed the postman. My disheartened mother decided to sell the snakes at bargain prices after that. She now sells the cobras for $30 and the pythons at $57. My friend Alan bought 2 cobras and 2 pythons last Friday and saved $226 because of the discounted prices. What was the discount for each type of snake?
Let's Solve It!
This math problem may look a bit hard. But don't despair. I will show you how to solve it in a few simple steps. The question says that Alan bought 2 cobras and 2 pythons and saved $226. If we divide that number by 2, we will get the savings for 1 python and 1 cobra: 226 ÷ 2 = $113 We also know from the question that the cobra cost $30 and the python cost $57. Therefore the cobra was cheaper than the python by: $57 - $30 = $27 In other words, the discount for the cobra was $27 more than the discount for the python. Now we can draw the model for the discount Alan received for each type of snake.

From the model above, we can easily calculate the discount for each type of snake. Discount for 1 python: ($113 - $27) ÷ 2 = $43 Discount for 1 cobra: $43 + $27 = $70
Math Answers for Singapore Maths Lesson 12
